A vehicle destroyed by fire on Highway 401 east of Grafton on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

Three fire departments were dispatched to a vehicle fire on Highway 401 east of Grafton.

Cobourg Fire Department was first dispatched at 11:22 a.m. to a vehicle fire in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 around the Grafton area.

The exact location wasn’t known, so Hamilton Township along with Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Departments were also dispatched.

With black smoke in the sky, the location was located at approximately one kilometre east of Lyle Street at Grafton.

The owner of the vehicle told Today’s Northumberland that he was traveling from Ottawa to pick up his relative from Pearson airport.

On his way back, just after Grafton the vehicle, that he’d purchased last year lost power. By the time he pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway flames were coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle.

The two occupants exited the vehicle and quickly grabbed two suitcases of luggage before the vehicle was engulfed in flames and destroyed.
