Port Hope resident Ruby Prest enjoyed a special gathering Sept. 13 in honour of her 100th birthday.
Daughter Cindy Stewart helped steer the festivities and shared some special memories of the woman born outside Lunenburg, NS, a century ago.
Ruby moved to Ontario as a young newlywed, and kept moving. She had married a banker, and they lived in a number of places.
Stewart said that her parents were often known as the two gems because her father’s name was Garnett (two t’s, after his mother’s maiden name).
In each community, Ruby would become a valued volunteer for important causes and an active member of the church, but never worked outside the home.
“My dad wanted her free to go on holidays,” Stewart recalled, and those holidays included regular trips down east.
The Prests retired in London, which is where Garnett died in 1999. About 11 years ago, Stewart wanted her mother to be closer, so she moved her to Port Hope. And during the COVID pandemic, Ruby moved into Aspira Empire Crossing Retirement Living.
“She is in a wonderful spot. She likes it,” Stewart stated.
“I am thrilled she’s as well as she is physically,” she added, sharing how her mother enjoyed the day.
It’s not a big family, but it is a scattered one. Two grandchildren from BC could not attend, but a cousin from Moncton, NB, made a trip to Ontario that included a timely visit with her.
“We have a very small family, but everyone was in touch. Everyone put things on Facebook or tried to call her. Everyone made sure to try to contact Mom one way or another. I am thrilled with them being happy for her.
“What I am happy about was her great-grandson was there, and her grandson and his wife,” Stewart added.
That would be Stewart’s son Eric and his son Marcel, and Marcel’s hug was a special moment. Not just the dutiful quick embrace, she said.
“He gave her such a nice hug – he wrapped his arms around her and hung on.”
