Exclusive – Cobourg Municipal By-Law Officers May Be Getting “Intermediate Weapons”

In Local

Today’s Northumberland has learned that Municipal Law Enforcement Officers in Cobourg may be getting upgrades to possess “intermediate weapons.”

Municipal By-Law Officers are “Peace Officers and lawfully authorized to possess intermediate weapons such as batons, OC spray and handcuffs if issued by the Town as part of their uniform kit.”

Currently, the MLEO have discussed both the “positive and negative” to carrying the items with other municipalities who have added the “personal protective equipment, defensive tactics and use of force training measures.”

Kara Euale, Communications Manager with the Town of Cobourg said, “no decision has been formally made regarding any change in MLEO operations at this time.”
