Cobourg Police Service Wraps Up May STEP Focused on High-Risk Driving Behaviours

The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has concluded the May Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP).

The May STEP initiative, aligned with Canada Road Safety Week 2025 themes, aimed to enhance road safety in Cobourg by targeting critical driving behaviours that endanger road users.

Canada Road Safety Week 2025, held from May 13 to 19, is an enforcement-driven campaign spearheaded by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP). This year’s theme, “ROAD SAFETY: Every road.

Every day.

Everyone,” is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025, which aspires to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

Throughout May, CPS focused on addressing high-risk driving behaviours, including impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and driving without a seatbelt.

Statistics:

• Four (4) impaired driving charges

• Ten (10) distracted driving charges

• Five (5) aggressive/careless driving charges

• Two (2) seatbelt violations

• Numerous warnings for the above offences and other traffic-related offences.

In addition to enforcement activities, CPS hosted a seatbelt awareness day and a car seat clinic on May 25.

Officers engaged with over 200 community members at seatbelt check stops throughout the community.

The car seat clinic welcomed 15 families who received guidance on proper car seat installation from Certified Car Seat Technicians.

CPS encourages all drivers to continue adopting safe driving practices and adhering to traffic regulations.
