Heritage Cramahe
By Trish O’Brien
This exhibit, situated in the Heritage Room of Colborne Art Gallery, examines the historical and cultural evolution of the shoreline of Colborne (Cramahe Township) from prehistoric times to the mid 1950s, through image, object, and text.

Fossils and sea glass found on stony beaches are in evidence, paintings, done on long summer afternoons at Loughbreeze or Victoria Beach, are on display, as well as an American coin from the early 19th century, found near the Hubble lake-side farm in the west part of the Township.

There are vintage photographs of women in high necked blouses and long skirts strolling on beaches, the Griffis family lounging on the porches of their brand new summer home built c 1900, and aerial shots of the shoreline from the 1950s that reveal row after row of apple trees, and – beyond the odd farmhouse and barn – very little architecture on the lakeshore.

At the opening of the exhibit on Saturday evening, March 15th, author and Heritage Committee member, Jane Urquhart, shared her childhood memories of summers spent by the lake, in the villages, and on the farms in Cramahe Township.

The exhibition continues to June 29th, Thursday to Sunday from 12 to 4 pm.
