Update – Video – Son Charged with Murdering His Mother in Cobourg Homicide

Today’s Northumberland has confirmed a Cobourg man has been charged with murdering his mother.

On the morning of March 2, 2025, Cobourg Police Service responded to a residence on James Street where one person was located deceased. Just before 10:00 a.m., members of the OPP were contacted to assist with the investigation.

Kenneth Trolley, age 41 was arrested and charged with the first degree murder of his mother Karen Ferguson who lived on the top floor of an apartment building on James Street West in Cobourg.

Police are still on scene as of Monday, March 3, 2025 and are sitting outside Ferguson’s apartment door.

One the door of apartment 9 is a hand-crafted sign with “Welcome” on it and a heart beside it.

At the base of the door is ornament of a black dog with a bone in its mouth.  A sign on the door states “2010 Society Supporter I Rescue – The Toronto Humane Society.”

A police officer is also guarding the outside the laundry room on the bottom floor of the apartment building with a police seal on that door.

A woman spoke with Today’s Northumberland on Sunday and said that she heard nothing unusual from the apartment early Sunday morning.

Detectives canvassed the building speaking to residents on Monday.

“Karen was always very kind and considerate. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about her,” said a relative on Monday.

“She was always quiet, but would give anyone a helping hand.”

It’s been learned that Trolley had just recently moved back to Cobourg from Montreal.

On Trolley’s social media account, the main photo is of a night image with a sign saying, “Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake.”

Other images show Jason who is a fictional character and primary killer in the Friday the 13th series.

The investigation is being conducted by the Cobourg Police Service with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
