Carol Coleman, Associate Director of Public Works, anticipates that the upgrade of the new Digital Mobile Radio System for fire and public-works departments within Northumberland County will be complete by month’s end.

Coleman’s report came Monday at county council’s Public Works Committee about the replacement of a single-site solution that dates back to 1967 and is built around the 300-ft. tower on County Road 45.

Final tasks include co-ordinating times to work with municipalities to get into the vehicles and work on their radios to make the actual switch-over, as well as a final meeting this week with county fire chiefs to have their questions answered.

Committee chair Scott Jibb asked what, if anything, is outstanding in terms of actual physical equipment. Everything is in place, Coleman said.

“Maybe Trent Hills – they have a battery back-up rather than a generator back-up, so we may need to install a generator at that location,” she added.

Coleman’s report anticipates that the County Road 45 tower should be decommissioned early this year.
