Shortly after Justin Trudeau announced he would be stepping down as Prime Minister (Monday, January 6, 2025), Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Philip Lawrence stated an election should take place.

“The announcement from the Prime Minister today changes nothing. Every Liberal MP and leadership contender played a part in creating Justin Trudeau’s disastrous legacy,” stated Lawrence.

“Canadians don’t want to sit around waiting for Liberal politicians to debate their futures and fortunes, they want an election and they want it now. We are facing a housing crisis, geopolitical uncertainty, and a struggling economy. Canadians deserve a strong government with a strong mandate, not a weak prime minister who is desperately clinging to power. Conservatives are the only ones who can fix what Justin Trudeau broke and bring home Canada’s promise.”

Trudeau announced he will step down as prime minister and Liberal leader once the party has chosen a new leader.

Trudeau also announces that Governor General Mary Simon has granted his request for the prorogation of Parliament until March 24.
