The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit met Thursday in a joint session with Peterborough Public Health, the amalgamated body to be known as the Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit.

The amalgamation was made following a suggestion from the provinces that health units initiate voluntary mergers, with one-time funding available for those whose mergers predate Jan. 1, 2025. The two boards voted in favour of merging last February. Thursday’s meeting was a session to tackle bylaws, terms of reference, committee appointments and the election of a chair and vice-chair.

A notification sent under the letterhead of the HKPR District Health Unit says, “During this time, both the HKPR District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health remain committed to engaging with the communities they serve, partners and teams to determine future opportunities to continue the legacy of public health care across the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the Greater Peterborough Area.”

A new name and logo are in the works. For now, you can contact your local health unit with the existing phone numbers, e-mails and physical locations, including the office at 200 Rose Glen Rd., Port Hope.
