Family Day Long Weekend Traffic and Trails Safety Initiative

In Crime, Local, News, Police Blotter

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – In anticipation of increased traffic on our highways, trails and over ice crossings this Family Day Long Weekend, members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be conducting increased high visibility patrols on both our roadways and trails within the county.

This local initiative will focus on increasing public compliance with traffic laws relating to the “Big Four” causal factors in motor vehicle collisions with the aim of saving lives. This will be accomplished by using a public education and enforcement approach beginning today through to midnight on Monday February 19, 2018.

The “Big Four” consist of impaired, inattentive, aggressive driving and lack of seat belt use proven to be the leading causal factors for a significant number of serious injury collisions and fatalities.

Officers will be conducting a number of RIDE programs utilizing snowmobiles, marked and unmarked police vehicles in an effort to reduce impaired driving and ensure compliance with a variety of provincial/federal laws and regulations.

Please help us in our efforts to make Ontario roadways among some of the safest in North America by operating on and off road vehicles in a safe and sober manner.
