Philip Lawrence, Member for Parliament for Northumberland—Peterborough South, released the following statement regarding the tabling of the 2024 Federal Budget:
“Budget 2024 should have been about growth.
“Canada is falling behind other advanced economies in terms of productivity. Five Canadian provinces are among North America’s six poorest jurisdictions. Our GDP per capita is now below
where it was in the fourth quarter of 2014.
“These aren’t just numbers that have no consequence to average Canadians. We saw record food bank usage in 2023, usage that’s predicted to grow this year. A recent study found that half
of Canadians are living paycheck to paycheck. Our young people have given up on the dream of homeownership. All of this can be attributed to a lack of economic growth.
“This Liberal government had the opportunity to choose prosperity in Budget 2024. Instead, they decided to put their own ideological desires above the needs of Canadians. To emerge
from Canada’s lost decade, the Government needed to empower Canadians to take back control of their lives. However, today they chose to burden Canadians with more taxes, more debt, and
more red tape.
“This Liberal government has made it very clear what kind of legacy they hope to leave: one of deprivation, division, and despair. The good news is that life in Canada wasn’t like this before
Prime Minister Trudeau, and it won’t be like this after he’s gone. We have a plan to bring prosperity back to Canada and we look forward to restoring the hope that has been lost over
these last eight years.”
