Downtown Cobourg Walk Offers Snapshot of Community Life

In Local

Even a short walk around downtown Cobourg can reveal something new, especially during the busy summer months.

Some sights reflect the challenges facing the downtown core, while others offer a brighter glimpse of the community.

Along the northeast side of Cobourg Harbour, a small gathering of ducks appeared content as they munched away on something they seemed to enjoy.

A new addition along the harbour’s north wall is drawing attention. Two orange chairs, symbolic of Indigenous children and the Orange Shirt Day movement “Every Child Matters,” have been chained in place. One message written on a chair reads, “One More Reason to Not Support The Roman Catholic Church!”

Thursday evening’s strong winds caused a few issues around town. Newly installed plants in front of the Experience Cobourg building were knocked over by the gusts. Potentially more concerning was a hanging planter along Second Street that appears to have fallen to the ground. Weighing upwards of 20 pounds, the planter could have caused injury had someone been walking beneath it when it fell.

Meanwhile, the Works Department has cleaned and organized many of the downtown garbage and recycling bins that are often found displaced throughout the area. New locks have also been installed on the bins in hopes of preventing future incidents.

Unfortunately, not all of the news was positive. The west side of the former Park Theatre building has once again been targeted by graffiti, with fresh spray paint appearing on the wall.
