With Wednesday’s meeting of Northumberland County council falling during Paramedics Week, Warden Bob Crate offered a few remarks of his own.
Crate noted that this dedicated corps serves an area of 1,907 sq. km., responding “with calm, capable professionalism” at what is often one of the most stressful times in a person’s life “not only with advanced medical expertise, but compassion, reassurance and humanity, delivering extraordinary care during these complex situations.”
These situations range from cardiac events and strokes to emergency childbirth “and countless other situations where seconds matter.”
Now in his ninth year on county council, Crate said he has had many opportunities to connect with the paramedics.
“Behind every uniform and every paramedic badge is a person deeply committed to serving this community with empathy, resilience and professionalism,” he stated – adding that this is their conduct with the families and loved ones of their patients as well.
“This week is a chance to acknowledge the people behind the badge – the paramedics, supervisors, communicators and support staff who work tirelessly to care for their community every single day,” Paramedics Chief Susan Brown said.
“Our paramedics remain committed to staying at the leading edge of technology, education and best-care practices,” Brown stated.
She also noted that they have moved beyond emergency care with the 2021 advent of their Community Paramedicine program that serves the needs of 5,000 vulnerable county residents in their homes.
