Private Retirement Party for Cobourg Police Chief Costs $5,000

In Local

The Cobourg Police Services Board has released more details surrounding a private retirement party for Paul VandeGraaf — including the cost to taxpayers.

VandeGraaf, who is retiring at the end of May, has served with the Cobourg Police Service as Deputy Chief and later Chief for a combined 12 years.

Today’s Northumberland learned the invitation-only event is being held Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn & Convention Centre.

Following a series of questions from Today’s Northumberland, Chair of the Cobourg Police Services Board, Adam Bureau confirmed Wednesday the event approved by the Board carries a cost of $5,000.

According to Bureau, the funding comes from the operating budget along with anonymous donors and covers food and the rental for the event.

Bureau also confirmed the gathering is a private function, with VandeGraaf determining who is invited.

Today’s Northumberland has also learned that despite the Board overseeing the Chief, at least one Board member was not invited to attend.

“While I cannot provide an exact count of attendees, I can confirm that there will be hors d’oeuvres available for guests, though a full dinner will not be served,” said Bureau.
