The annual Castleton Sports Club Fishing Derby got underway on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Ryken’s Pond north of Castleton, drawing more than 150 anglers for the opening day of the popular two-day event.

Despite chilly temperatures, organizers say the turnout and atmosphere were strong from the start, continuing a tradition that has been part of the community since 1989.

Castleton Sports Club volunteer Jeff Turney described Saturday as a “great day,” noting a steady flow of families coming through the event grounds throughout the day. The derby has become a multi-generational outing for many local residents, with parents, children and even grandparents taking part side by side.

“That’s kind of what it’s all about,” Turney said. “Escape for a little bit, be here with the families and enjoy themselves.”

Each year, Ryken’s Pond is stocked a few weeks in advance with more than 300 rainbow trout, helping to ensure an active and engaging fishing experience for participants of all ages. The Ryken family once again generously provided access to the pond for the event.

Alongside the fishing, participants were able to enjoy a barbecue and enter a raffle featuring a wide selection of prizes, adding to the community-focused atmosphere.

“We’ve had a good steady stream of families coming in,” Turney said, adding that one young participant fishing for the first time “had the time of his life.”

Proceeds from the derby support the Castleton Sports Club, which maintains a recreational facility featuring four soccer pitches and two baseball diamonds. In the winter months, weather permitting, the club also installs two outdoor skating rinks that are open to the public free of charge.

The fishing derby continues on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. and running until 3 p.m., with activities focused on youth anglers aged 14 and under.
