Municipality of Port Hope Mayor Hankivsky’s Statement Regarding Collision on Highway 401

In Local

On behalf of Council and the entire community of Port Hope, I want to express our deepest sorrow following the tragic accident that occurred last evening on Highway 401.

This devastating incident has deeply affected families, colleagues, and first responders. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the OPP officer from the Northumberland Detachment who lost his life in the line of duty. We also hold in our thoughts all those who were injured and continue to recover as a result of this incident.

I want to recognize and thank the first responders who attended the scene under extremely difficult circumstances, particularly members of the Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services and Port Hope Police Service. Their professionalism, courage, and compassion in the face of tragedy exemplify the very best of public service.

Today is the National Day of Mourning, a day observed across Canada to honour workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or become ill as a result of their work. The heartbreaking events of last night serve as a solemn reminder of the risks faced every day by those who work to keep our communities safe.

In recognition of this tragic loss and in observance of the Day of Mourning, flags have been lowered to half-mast at municipal facilities across Port Hope.
