In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

As four OPP motorcycles were parked outside Northumberland OPP Detachment in Cobourg, OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique broke the news at 10:45 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026.

“It is with a broken heart that I stand before you to share the tragic news of the on-duty death of Sergeant Brandon Malcolm.”

Carrique said that Brandon was killed in what is believed to be a single vehicle collision involving a OPP motorcycle on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 approximately two-kilometres west of Cobourg at approximately 5:40 p.m. on April 27, 2026.

“Hearts are broken – OPP right across this Province hearts are shattered right now as is our colleagues with other police services.”

Brandon was a member of the Golden Helmets Motorcycle Team who was living his dream of becoming a police officer.

Prior to joining the Ontario Provincial Police, Brandon was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and an auxiliary officer with the Toronto Police Service.

In 2020 he joined the OPP and “was living his best life as a police officer and a very proud member of the Golden Helmets.”

“The Sergeant served his community with dedication, honour who has made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Carrique said at this point there is no evidence there was another vehicle involved in the fatal collision, but at this point of the investigation they aren’t ruling it out.

“This is an individual that sacrificed their life to serve and protect this province. An individual that was dedicated to duty, committed to the passion of policing and an extremely proud to be a member of our Golden Helmets and I will be forever grateful to him for service.”

“He has been taken far to soon under tragic circumstances and we owe him and his family a great deal of gratitude.”

Carrique thanked other emergency services for responding to the tragic scene.

“They all came to our aid when we needed them the most.”

Shortly after the press conference, four members of the Golden Helmets, started their motorcycles and  rode off from the detachment.
