A Northumberland OPP officer was killed in the line of duty following a single vehicle collision on Highway 401 on Monday, April 27, 2026.

At approximately 5:40 p.m. emergency services responded to a single vehicle collision involving a motorcycle approximately two kilometres west of Burnham Street in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401.

Northumberland OPP, Cobourg Fire Department, Hamilton Township Fire Department, Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services, Northumberland County Paramedics, Cobourg Police and Port Hope Police responded to the collision.

Tragically the Northumberland OPP officer was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A secondary collision happened in the westbound lanes when it appears a three vehicle collision which involved two OPP cruisers.  A citizen had stopped to render assistance to the officer when their vehicle was struck from behind.

There were no serious injuries following the secondary collisions.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours following the collisions.

The officer has been identified as Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, who joined the OPP in June 2020 and served his entire career with the Northumberland Detachment.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance is being provided by the OPP Traffic Management and Enforcement Team, as well as OPP Forensic Identification Services.
