Video – Third Swatting Incident Reported at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Cobourg

In Police Blotter

For the third time in a week, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School has been the target of a swatting incident, prompting another police response and heightened concern among students, staff and families.

At approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026, Cobourg Police Service responded to the school after receiving a report of threats. As a precaution, the school was placed in a “hold and secure,” with students remaining in their classrooms while officers conducted a thorough investigation of the building.

Police confirmed shortly before 11 a.m. that the scene had been cleared and there was no threat to public safety.

The incident is the third reported at the school within a week. Previous threats—also determined to be false—occurred on April 13 and April 17. In a separate but similar case, C.R. Gummow Elementary School received an active shooter threat on April 14. Authorities believe all of the incidents are connected to swatting, a criminal act involving false or misleading information intended to trigger a significant emergency response.

In a message sent to families at 11:05 a.m., Principal Jill Barker acknowledged the growing concern within the school community.

“This morning, Cobourg Police attended the building and students were required to remain in their classrooms while the building was assessed. Police have since cleared the school and have determined that there is no threat. The school has returned to its regular schedule,” Barker said.

She added that the repeated incidents are being taken seriously.

“We are acutely aware that this is the third such incident in a week. Please know that we share your frustration and concern. While these have been determined to be ‘swatting’ calls, we treat every call with the utmost seriousness to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

Barker noted the ongoing impact on the school community, saying the incidents may cause increased anxiety for students and staff. She confirmed that the school’s Crisis Support Team remains available on-site for anyone needing support.

Police continue to investigate the source of the calls and are working with the school to identify those responsible. Swatting incidents can carry serious criminal consequences, including charges related to public mischief and false alarms.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cobourg Police Service.
