Township of Hamilton Receives Fourth Consecutive GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

In City Hall, Local

The Township of Hamilton is proud to announce that its 2026 Budget has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), marking the fourth consecutive year the Township has earned this prestigious recognition.

The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award represents the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and is awarded to organizations whose budget documents meet internationally recognized guidelines that evaluate how effectively a budget functions as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications tool. Achieving this award reflects the Township’s ongoing commitment to excellence in financial planning, transparency, and public accountability.

While the full list of 2026 award recipients has not yet been released, the significance of this achievement is underscored by previous years’ results. In 2025, only 25 municipalities in Ontario received this distinction out of 444 eligible municipalities. Among those recipients, the Township of Hamilton was the smallest municipality to receive the award, reflecting the ability to meet the same rigorous standards of excellence as larger municipalities across the province, despite operating with a much smaller staff complement and more limited resources.

“Council is pleased to see the Township recognized once again with the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. This speaks to the effort that goes into preparing our annual budget and the care taken to present it in a clear and transparent way. On behalf of Council, I want to thank our Treasurer, Nusrat Ahmed, and her team. Their efforts help ensure we are being responsible with taxpayer dollars and providing residents with a budget they can understand and have confidence in.” said Mayor Scott Jibb.

Earning this award reflects the collective work of staff across all departments, whose contributions provide the data, operational insight, and strategic direction required to develop a comprehensive budget document. Their efforts ensure that the Township of Hamilton continues to meet the standards set out by the GFOA while supporting informed decision-making by Council and the community.

The Township’s 2026 Budget is a comprehensive financial plan that supports the delivery of essential services, investment in infrastructure, and long-term financial sustainability. The approved budget totals approximately $16.9 million, including a $14 million operating budget and a $2.9 million capital budget, with a focus on maintaining service levels while addressing ongoing pressures such as inflation, aging infrastructure, and increased service demand.

The Township of Hamilton remains committed to maintaining high standards in financial reporting and ensuring residents have clear, accessible information about how municipal funds are planned and used.

The Government Finance Officers Association serves more than 25,000 members across North America and promotes excellence in government finance through best practices, professional development, and research. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award program includes over 1,900 participants and highlights organizations that demonstrate leadership in public sector budgeting.
