St. Mary Thunder Capture Bronze at OFSAA Girls Volleyball Championship

Cobourg’s St. Mary Catholic Secondary School senior girls Thunder volleyball team won bronze Wednesday afternoon as the three-day Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AA’ championship concluded in Kitchener.

Ranked 11th out of 20 teams entering the tournament, the Thunder won three of four pool play matches, losing only to No. 1 seed Branksome Hall from Toronto which went on to win the gold medal. St. Mary earned wins in Pool A over Lorne Park, Manitoulin and Timmins.

In the quarterfinals on Tuesday, St. Mary swept King’s Christian from Oakville 3-0 before falling 3-1 to Aurora in the semifinals Wednesday morning.

St. Mary prevailed in the bronze medal game over St. John Henry Newman Catholic School from Hamilton, clinching the win in four sets 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-17, 27-25).
