Municipality of Clarington Accelerates $3.75 Million Investment in Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment

In Local

The Municipality of Clarington has expedited a portion of its historic $7.5 million commitment, providing $3.75 million toward the Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment Project ahead of schedule.

The Bowmanville Hospital Foundation welcomed the early investment as a clear signal of confidence in the project and its transformational impact on local health care. It also underscores the importance of timely investment in one of the most significant health-care infrastructure projects in the region.

For 50 years, the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation has transformed community generosity into life-saving care close to home.

This tradition of giving now underpins the We Care, We Can campaign – the largest in the Foundation’s history – raising the community’s share of construction costs and 100% of equipment needs for this once-in-a-generation redevelopment.

“This early investment from the Municipality of Clarington is a powerful demonstration of trust in the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment project and a shared commitment to meeting the health care needs of a growing community,” said Maria Petri, CEO, Bowmanville Hospital Foundation.

“Receiving these funds at this stage allows the project to advance through key milestones and brings us one step closer to delivering a modern, purpose-built hospital for patients and families across Durham Region.”

With Durham Region’s population expected to double by 2041, the demand for care is rising faster than the hospital’s current infrastructure can support. The redeveloped hospital will double in size, modernize care, and expand essential services, reducing the need to travel outside of the community for care.

“I couldn’t be prouder that Clarington has stepped up to invest in our community’s health care. This redevelopment is over 20 years in the making, and it’s so satisfying to see it finally moving forward. As more people choose to call Clarington home, it’s important that our local services grow with us – which is why it’s so exciting to see Lakeridge Health Bowmanville gearing up to more than double its size. You can bet that our neighbours and families will appreciate having state-of-the-art care right here at home,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

“Clarington’s decision to accelerate half of its commitment reflects strong leadership and commitment to the future of health care in our community,” said Laura Sciore, Board Chair, Bowmanville Hospital Foundation. “This partnership is critical to the success of the project, and this investment reflects the trust driving the redevelopment forward.”

The brand-new hospital will be built entirely on site, ensuring patient care remains uninterrupted throughout construction. Recent milestones include the release of the Request for Proposals to two experienced teams and enabling projects to prepare the site for construction, bringing the community closer to a modern, redeveloped hospital.

The Municipality of Clarington’s transformational investment paves the way as the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation continues to lead the effort to raise the community’s share of the project. Support from residents, businesses, and partners remains vital to keep the project moving forward.

As one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario, Durham Region’s population is expected to double by 2041.
