Update – Durham Region Police – Male Facing Charges After Armed Person Incident in Oshawa (Name Released)

A male is facing charges after an armed person call in Oshawa.

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, at approximately 10:45 a.m., officers from Central East Division responded to an armed person call in the area of Simcoe Street South and Bloor Street East. Officers arrived on scene and located an armed male. During the interaction with the suspect, an officer and the suspect were shot. The officer was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre in critical but stable condition. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Tyler VILNEFF, age 27 from Oshawa is charged with: Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon, and Weapons Dangerous.

He was held for a bail hearing.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate. DRPS is fully cooperating with the SIU and cannot release further details regarding this incident.
