Video – Marriage Proposal Kicks Off Fireworks at Cobourg’s First Night Celebrations

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as a couple who held their first date in Cobourg became engaged at Cobourg’s First Night Celebrations.

Just minutes before the fireworks took place at 9 p.m. over Cobourg Harbour, Tristan Maharaja and Shayna Sanicharan arrived by horse and wagon and were dropped off on the esplanade just south of Rotary Harbourfront Rink.

Just a few minutes prior, friends of Tristan has set up a number of white lights, with flowers in a box just south of the esplanade.

After a brief stroll by the Christmas lights, Tristan escorted Shayna over to the spot, got down on one knee and proposed to the love of his life.

Tristan grew up in Pickering, but used to come to Cobourg regularly with his parents to enjoy the beach.

Both Tristan and Shayna live outside of Northumberland County, but have a lot of good memories of Cobourg.

The couple’s first date was also in Cobourg in December 2020.

“We came here and we walked around the marina and I felt it was good to return here,” said Tristan, who “proposed to the love of my life.”

Everything went perfectly during the proposal, but he admits he was nervous.

During his proposal, Tristan said, “thank you for sticking by me through all the tough times and the good times and you’re the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. Will you marry me?”

Shayna admits she thought something was in the works, “but I had no idea he’d do all of this.”

“It was more than perfect.”

“I’m so happy and so surprised and so glad to spend forever with him.”

Moments after the engagement, the fireworks started to the applause and cheers of friends of the couple.
