Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland is urging anyone who wants to offer feedback on the Northumberland County homeless shelter to be at the Cobourg Community Centre at 6 PM June 17 for the town-hall meeting on the topic.

“It’s an opportunity for our residents and business owners to provide their feedback and concerns and recommendations on the low-barrier shelter at 310 Division St.,” Cleveland said at Wednesday’s council meeting, noting that county council has also requested a report to explore the possibility of transforming the low-barrier shelter into a sober-living facility.

“People have a right to feel safe, and to be safe,” the mayor said.

While the town attempted to do its part through the Emergency Care Establishment, he continued, the town, as a lower-tier municipality is not permitted to make changes regarding the facility’s operation.
“We as a Cobourg council are eager to hear from the members of our community who have benefited from Transition House, and from those whose experiences have been less than optimal.”

Cleveland said he would take this feedback and any recommendations that arise from this meeting back to Northumberland County council.

Anyone wishing to speak can register by e-mailing the clerk. As well, staff will be on hand June 17 to sign up anyone else who wishes to speak.
