Cobourg and Hamilton Township Fire Services spent Friday, May 24, 2025 practicing extrication training at Chadwick’s Towing Yard.
Hamilton Township Fire Department has recently purchased $100,000 in new extrication equipment and invited Cobourg Fire Department along for training on Friday.
“We respond to a lot of areas together with Hamilton Township wrapping around the Town of Cobourg,” said Cobourg Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Ashfield.
“This equipment will come into use and our crews will know how it works with their crews and work collaboratively together.”
Working hands-on with a neighbouring fire department with a real life scenario is invaluable says Ashfield.
The scenario involved a school bus that was rear-ended by a vehicle and the extrication of the driver.
“We need to understand how to get the people out safely and make sure our firefighters aren’t injured while they are doing the work and everything is safe for them.”
Ashfield said all the training was provided free of charge.
“Chadwick’s provided the bus and the car, a representative from Holmatro (extrication equipment) are providing all the training for both of our departments.”
“It goes hand-in-hand to make sure all of our scenes are safe for our firefighters and all the people we serve.”
