Video – Cobourg Yacht Club Hosts Kite Foil Regatta

In Local

The Cobourg Yacht Club is hosting the first annual Kite Foil Regatta this weekend.

Competitors for the event have come from Toronto to Montreal to compete south of Cobourg on Lake Ontario.

The kite foils are launched from Victoria Beach and head off shore for approximately two-kilometres for the races.

There needs to be at least seven knots of wind for the racers to compete.

“In the Spring and Fall we have great wind for this type of sailing,” said organizer Annie McCaughey.

“Cobourg is an ideal location with the beach launch and the club to host the before and after events. It’s very fast paced racing.”

One of the participants was getting ready for the afternoon racing and spoke with Today’s Northumberland.

Participants were from as far away as Quebec to Toronto.

The sport is like “walking on eggs,” with their being so much going on with the sail and the board.

“You have to be very careful.”

“But after awhile you get used to it.”

With the foil the speeds can reach up to 60 kph in comparison, without the foil, they would be half that speed.

Competitors are hoping to get in six to eight on Saturday and Sunday weather permitting.
