Video – Pride and Patriotism Takes Over Downtown Cobourg

In Local

Following the Easter weekend the DBIA has installed approximately 140 Canadian flags throughout the downtown in Cobourg.

Carleigh Hunter, administrator for the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA) said flags are usually up during the summer months, but with the sense of pride and patriotism sweeping over the country since President Trump spoke of tariffs imposed on Canada it was decided the flags would be installed sooner.

“We’re really looking into local, Canadian and community and we really want to show our support for the downtown businesses.”

During the summer months downtown Cobourg is extremely busy with activities and Hunter adds that tourism is a big part of that business.

“We’ve always welcomed visitors from across Canada, the United States and beyond, but we want to show how proud we are to be Canadian and operating a business in downtown Cobourg.”

Not only are there Canadian flags, but stores are displaying posters that say, “Proud To Be Local Canadian Downtown.”

Since the word “tariff” has become almost a household name, Hunter said it’s also created a sense of patriotism locally and throughout the country.

“We’re really feeling that sense of community and Canadian pride in the downtown and it’s great to see everyone rallying together to support what matters.”

Cinco De Mayo takes place on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. along King Street which will bhe the official kick-off to the patio season.

There will also be Taco tasting tour, a dance party on King, learn to merengue, Mexican art workshop, Zumba demos, a Street market, food trucks, flower crown pet portraits, Pinata fun along with kids activities.
