Alnwick/Haldimand Township Continues Ice Storm Clean-Up and Resident Support

Staff at the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand continue to clear and maintain Township roads and municipal properties following the Ice Storm of March 29-30, 2025.

Public Works Update
Over the course of the two-day weather event, the Township’s Public Works department responded to 35 calls for service. Both Public Works and Fire Crews continue to clear and respond to downed trees and hydro poles and wires, working with Hydro One crews and contractors where required.

At time of release, the following roads remain closed due to debris or hydro wires on the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand roads:

• Vernonville Rd south of Vernonville

• Halstead Rd

• 4th Line

• Telephone Rd east of Vernonville Rd

• Eddystone Rd.

The primary focus for the Public Works Department has been making the roads passable. Clean-up of ditches and roadside shoulders is expected to take several weeks. With high winds expected this afternoon, Public Works staff continue to actively monitor and patrol Township roadways to identify areas of issue.

Parks, Recreation & Facilities Update
Due to area power outages, all programming and rentals at the Haldimand Memorial Arena and Community Centres in Vernonville, Centreton, Fenella and Roseneath is cancelled until further notice. Staff will be contacting permit holders and program participants to cancel and reschedule bookings were available.

Parks, Recreation & Facilities staff continue to monitor all Township facilities and properties. Due to tree damage sustained during the Ice Storm and expected high winds in the upcoming days, all parks, greenspaces, walking trails, and the Nauwautin Nature Sanctuary are closed to the public until further notice.

Fire & Protective Services
The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department continue to respond to calls for service related to downed hydro poles and wires following the ice storm. Fire crews are advising the public of the following:

• Remain vigilant when driving and to not cross or remove barricades blocking roads due to downed wires.

• Stay at least 10 metres back from fallen power lines and report them by calling 1-800-434-1235.

• Place generators in well-ventilated, open-air areas outside homes and garages to avoid the risk of CO poisoning.

• To reduce risk of fire hazards, do not overload power cords from generators to appliances inside of homes or garages.

• Check in on your neighbours to ensure all are safe and have adequate supplies until power is restored.

To assist residents without power, all three Fire Halls in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand will be open by appointment only until further notice from 8:00am to 8:00pm. The Halls will be available for residents to charge cell phones and other electronics, prepare food, warm up, shower, and/or fill up on fresh water.
