Video – Getting Set for Summer – New Boardwalk Being Put Together Piece by Piece

In Local

Public Works staff have been busy constructing the new boardwalk that will be installed from Hibernia Street to Ontario Street in Cobourg.

Today’s Northumberland got a first hand look at town staff working on piecing together the boardwalk at the Public Works Yard in Northam Industrial Park.

The first boardwalk was constructed nearly 20 years ago.

Due to its wooden construction and being exposed to the elements of sand, rain, snow and ice staff were repairs areas of the boardwalk on a weekly basis during the summer months to ensure it was safe for public use.

The old boardwalk was determined to be at the end of its service life and Council approved its reconstruction in 2023.

The new boardwalk is constructed using pressure treated wood materials for the decking and recycled plastic/composite materials for the substructure.

The new boardwalk will be constructed at-grade (non-elevated) and will be widened to 12 feet to meet the recommendations provided by the Town of Cobourg Accessibility Advisory Committee.

To reduce costs, the boardwalk is being constructed by Town staff at the Public Works yard and will be installed in sections.

Through the design process, an environmental impact assessment was conducted that identified native vegetation that should be transplanted out of the construction zone.

In the fall of 2023 and under the supervision of Beacon Environmental, vegetation was moved just outside of the construction area, near their original location, but providing enough distance for protection during construction.
