Northumberland OPP Introduce Body Worn Cameras

In Police Blotter

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) can now be seen wearing Body Worn Cameras (BWCs).

The OPP supports the implementation and use of tools and technologies that enable collecting better evidence, demonstrate greater accountability and transparency, and enhance public and officer safety in the communities we serve.

In addition to In-Car Cameras (ICCs) with integrated Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR), BWCs are tools that may produce better evidence, enhance accountability and reduce public complaints, thereby increasing public trust.

The BWCs are worn on the front of the officer’s vest and are clearly visible to anyone an officer may be interacting with. The BWC will display a visible ring of flashing green lights when in standby mode and flashing red lights when the BWC is recording.

Officers are currently being trained on the use of the new techn ology and are being outfitted with their BWC upon the completion of their training. The full rollout for the Northumberland OPP is anticipated by June, however officers who have received their training will begin use of the BWCs immediately.

Members of the Northumberland OPP are committed to public safety, delivering proactive and innovative police in partnership with our communities. Officers value your contribution to building safe communities.
