Depending who you ask, the cause of a fire at the Golden Plough Lodge Long Term Care facility has been deemed undetermined or accidental.

The fire broke out on Saturday, March 1, 2025 shortly before 3 p.m..

A lounge chair caught fire and the sprinkler system was activated.

A total of 23 residents and staff were assessed with five staff being treated at hospital for smoke inhalation.

As a result of the fire there was smoke and water damage to areas of the facility.

Northumberland County Director of Communications Kate Campbell offered a different cause earlier in the week stating officials with the fire department said the cause was “accidental.”

In a e-mail to people who have loved ones at the facility, Director of Health and Human Services stated that he hoped, “you and your loved ones are doing well after the unsettling experience.”

“I am writing to let you know that the Fire Department has officially confirmed that, with no evident sources of ignition during their evaluation, the cause of the fire is deemed “accidental.”

Dees added that restoration is continuing in the McMillan Cottage and Garden areas.

“Dehumidifiers and fans are being used to remove excess moisture from the air and building materials as preliminary remediation efforts.”

Cobourg Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Ashfield told Today’s Northumberland on Thursday that fire officials have deemed the fire “undetermined” meaning they were not able to find a cause.
