In Local

Officials have determined the cause of a house fire in Port Hope that suffered extensive damage.

On Friday, February 28, 2025 Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services received responded to a residential fire on Chalmers Court.

When fire crews arrived there was heavy smoke coming from the single story home and visible flames.

There was no one home at the time of the fire that appeared to have started in the basement and burned through to the main floor.

Fire Chief Jason Williams said the cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction of circuitry in the ceiling in the mechanical room of the basement.

Damage to the home is estimated at $500,000.

During the investigation, it was also determined there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

“The fire department will be following up with the owner accordingly and will also be conducting a targeted door-to-door campaign in the neighbourhood surrounding the incident to reiterate the importance of having working smoke alarms on every floor of your home.”
