Video – Neighbours Breathe A Sigh of Relief as Duplex Gets Boarded Up in Cobourg

In Local

Residents in the area are breathing a sigh of relief after a well known duplex was boarded up on Thursday morning in Cobourg.

The duplex located on John Street has been the location of various occurrences with emergency services including a number of warrants issued by police over the last several years.

A Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant was executed a week ago by heavily armed OPP members along with Cobourg Police

On Thursday, February 6, 2025 a number of municipal by-law officers, Cobourg Police, at least one representative from Northumberland County stood by as a number of residents packed their belongings and left the residence of 351/353 John Street.

Workers spent the morning boarding up the windows and doors of the duplex as neighbours watched and drove by.

One woman who lives nearby told Today’s Northumberland she was overcome with emotion as she was driving by the residence and noticed it being boarded up.

The woman and other residents said over recent years the home has caused them frustration with the amount of police activity due to the drug culture at the residence.

“The owner has decided to close the property due to ongoing issues taking place at this location,” said Cobourg CAO Tracey Vaughan.

“The staff that are on scene are at the request of the owner to ensure that supports are available and the process goes smoothly and safely for everyone.”

Municipal by-law has identified numerous property stand issues that the owner is responsible for and the owner has determined that boarding the duplex up is the best course of action.
