Peterborough County OPP – Omemee Man Charged with Impaired After Collision Shuts Down Highway 115 (Name Released)

In Police Blotter

Officers from the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended a single vehicle collision on Highway 115 that led to the driver being charged with impaired and northbound lanes being shut down.

On January 19, 2025, just prior to 6:00pm, Peterborough County OPP received a report of a vehicle that had gone off the road on Highway 115 near Larmer Line. Information had been forwarded from Lindsay EMS that a single vehicle had rolled, coming to rest in the ditch in the northbound lanes. The vehicle driver managed to extricate themself from the vehicle with minor injuries.

Officers attended the scene where the driver was attended to by EMS. The officer, while speaking with the driver, made a demand for the Approved Screening Device (ASD) which they complied with. The driver provided a sample of their breath resulting of a reading of FAIL, at which point they were arrested.

Thomas HAWMAN (age 59) of Omemee, ON, was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on February 25, 2025.

As a result of the collision, a Hydro pole was struck causing the lines to hang across the northbound lanes of the highway. The northbound lanes were closed and traffic had to be turned around and escorted off the highway by OPP. Traffic was diverted off the highway at the Tapley ¼ Line. The northbound lanes of the highway remained closed until repair crews were able to attend and fix the pole and lines at which time the lanes were reopened to traffic.

The Peterborough County OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
