Advocate for Accessibility: Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee Seeks New Members

In Local

With International Day of Persons with Disabilities approaching on December 3, the Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee (NAAC) is encouraging Northumberland community members to join them in ‘Advocating for Accessibility, Together’ by contributing their voice to help build a barrier-free future.

The NAAC is seeking community members with disabilities or related lived experience to share their thoughts, ideas, and feedback, to help improve the accessibility of County initiatives and programs.

Each year, December 3rd is recognized as International Day of Persons with Disabilities by the United Nations and communities from around the world. This year, Northumberland County is recognizing the day with the theme, “Advocating for Accessibility Together.” This theme underscores the importance of collective action in ensuring accessibility for all. It calls for collaboration between individuals, communities, organizations and governments to break down barriers and create inclusive environments.

“Northumberland County is committed to accessibility and working with our Accessibility Advisory Committee,” states Northumberland County’s Accessibility Coordinator and staff liaison to the NAAC, Andrea Nicholson. “We’re looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about making a difference and championing accessibility within our community. Joining the NAAC is a unique opportunity to advocate for a more inclusive environment for everyone.”

The NAAC plays a vital role in advocating for accessibility and fostering a more inclusive environment within Northumberland. By collaborating closely with County Council and staff, the NAAC ensures that County services, programs, and facilities are accessible to everyone.

“Disabilities are only noticed because our society is not fully accessible. Together we work to help put the pieces together to finish the puzzle,” states Bobby-Jo Preston, NAAC Chair. “Our committee values the lived experience of its members to inform decisions that help improve accessibility for all community members. By working together, we can create a community where everyone can fully participate.”

Residents interested in applying for the committee are invited to submit an online application by December 6, 2024, by visiting Northumberland.ca/NAAC. The application form is also available in an alternate format upon request. Please email accessibility@northumberland.ca or call 905-372-3329 ext. 2327 for more information.
