Update – Letter Received by Today’s Northumberland May Result in Investigation by Inspector General

In Local

A letter Today’s Northumberland received on Friday, November 1, 2024 may be turned over to the Inspector General for review and possibly investigation.

The letter is alleged to have been authored by a member of the management team at the Cobourg Police Service who reported a number of incidents regarding unethical practices, illegal activities, racism, sexism and cronysim within the service.

The letter gives the indication it may have been sent to other individuals as it states at the beginning, “To the Concerned Parties.”

The four-page letter names specific officers, which Today’s Northumberland will not be naming.

“My intent with this letter is not only to initiate a thorough investigation, but also to shed light on the troubling dynamics within the Cobourg Police.”

The letter is not signed.

Cobourg Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf issued a statement concerning the letter on November 2, 2024 stating, “I am dismayed that Today’s Northumberland made the decision to publish an article referencing an anonymous letter with unverified allegations and gross generalizations about the Cobourg Police Service,” stating it was “irresponsible.”

“Public trust, transparency and accountability are at the core of the police service.”

Today’s Northumberland met with a member of the Cobourg Police Service on Sunday, November 3, 2024 handed the letter to police.

A special Cobourg Police Services Board meeting was called for Monday, November 4, 2024.

One of the options is to notify the Inspector General for review or investigation.

Today’s Northumberland will provide further updates as they become available.
