Editor’s Note – Regarding Letter Received by Today’s Northumberland

In Local

Editor’s Note: Today’s Northumberland feels it must comment on the three statements made by the Chief, President of the Association and now the President of the Cobourg Police Seniors Officers Association.

When Today’s Northumberland received the letter in the mail concerning the Cobourg Police Service on Friday, November 1, 2024 we read it numerous times over a 24-hour period.

All three statements are correct in that the letter lists a number of “allegations.”

Parts of the letter contain specific information that would be known to very few members of the general public.  Most likely only people that work for the service and know the inner operations.

When asked by the service for the letter, Today’s Northumberland voluntarily gave it to the service.

How they proceed is up to the service.

Today’s Northumberland omitted the names of the officers contained in the letter as they are allegations.

Over the last several weeks, Today’s Northumberland has sent several letters to the Chief, Communications Officer and Police Services Board recently regarding issues of communication.

The Chief has not respond to any, the Communications Officers doesn’t respond in a timely manner and the Board has only responded when asked what took place at their meeting.

As stated by the Chief, if “public trust, transparency, and accountability are at the core of the police service,” then communication must fall within that.

We also take exception to the description by Chief Paul VandeGraaf that it was “irresponsible” and by President of the Cobourg Police Senior Officers Association Lisa Munday that the story was “carelessly published.”
