Cobourg’s Dredger Sitting Idle for the Summer in Harbour

In Local

The Town of Cobourg’s dredger, the Marie Dressler has been sitting idle at the south end of the east pier for the summer.

Manager of Communications, Kara Euale said the town was unable to complete a dredge of the harbour this spring due to a piece of equipment that was on back order.

“The part was not delivered until late June, however, once the summer season has started, we do not dredge unless necessary. Our dredging permit is open until October 31, 2024 so work could be completed in the late summer or early fall if required.”

Euale said staff measure the depth of the harbour daily to ensure adequate depth for the Coast Guard and recreational watercraft.

The dredge is still in the water because it requires a crane to lift it out.

“It would be an added expense to do this mid summer, therefore, it will be lifted out in October during our regular scheduled lift-out.”

The pipe that accompanies the dredge is stretching along the length of the east pier and has not been moved either during the summer months while pedestrians are walking on the pier.

While it could be a tripping liability for the town, Euale adds, “it is standard for the dredge piping to remain on the east pier during the summer. Staff are investigating ways that infrastructure could be created to house the hose when the East Pier is renovated. For now, staff are moving the piping to the edge of the pier so that it does not impede those who want to walk the pier.”
