Pride Month Celebrations Set to Begin in Northumberland

In Local, Upcoming Events

This June, Northumberland County and communities around the globe will be celebrating Pride Month.

Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the 2SLGBTQI+ community, while acknowledging ongoing challenges in the fight against discrimination and violence based on sexual or gender identity. Throughout the month, 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies gather to celebrate the resilience, talent and contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

On the evening of Friday, May 31st, Northumberland County will raise the Progress Pride Flag to fly on the County’s community flagpole until June 7th in recognition of the celebrations. The Progress Pride Flag includes a five-coloured chevron with black, brown, white, pink, and light blue. The black and brown represent marginalized people of colour, while the white, pink, and light blue represent those of the Transgender Pride Flag. In the traditional rainbow flag, red stands for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for the soul.

“Northumberland County is committed to fostering a community that embraces diversity and promotes inclusion,” states County Warden Brian Ostrander. “During Pride Month, we recommit our efforts to preventing discrimination and violence based on sexual or gender identity. This June, we invite community members to join us in celebrating Pride in our community by participating in local events and celebrations taking place across Northumberland. Together, we can all contribute to a more inclusive and welcoming Northumberland.”
