Municipality of Port Hope Pursues Opportunities to Address Community Need for Increased Access to Child Care

In Community, Local

Recognizing the increasing need for child care services in Port Hope, the Municipality has identified two locations that present the opportunity to introduce additional child care centres in the community. The locations for these two potential child care centres are the former Ruth Clarke Activity Centre at 81 Mill Street South and the Canton Hub at 5325 County Road 10.

Planning is currently underway to enhance these sites, ensuring they meet the necessary licensing requirements. The Municipality of Port Hope has engaged Northumberland County, as the local system service manager, along with child care service providers Ganaraska Child Care Centre and YMCA Northumberland to collaborate on this process.

“Facilitating access to licensed local child care is crucial for our community, and we are delighted to contribute to the realization of this initiative,” notes Olena Hankivsky, Mayor for the Municipality of Port Hope. “Members of Council have been working on and advocating for this initiative since the start of our term. We are enthusiastic about the prospect of creating high-quality child care spaces in our community utilizing repurposed municipal buildings to align with the specific needs of our residents.”

Local municipalities and service providers across Ontario are working together to make child care more affordable and accessible, while giving children the best start in life.

Introducing two new facilities in the Municipality of Port Hope will help contribute to Northumberland County’s overall goal to introduce 404 new high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive early learning and child care spaces across the county by 2026.
