(HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, ON) – Officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver with impaired operation.

On December 4, 2023, Northumberland OPP were conducting a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot check on Nagle Road, Hamilton Township. Shortly before 10:20 p.m., a vehicle approached and was stopped by an officer. During the investigation, grounds were formed that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol, resulting in the accused being arrested.

William BUDD, 41-years-old from Grafton, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle.

The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 45. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date.

R.I.D.E. is an initiative that is ran throughout the year. The Festive R.I.D.E. program runs from November 16, 2023 to January 1, 2024. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan not to drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that excludes impaired driving. If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 9-1-1 to report it.
