Peterborough County OPP – Multiple Traffic Complaints Lead to Impaired Driving Charges (Name Released)

Multiple reports were received regarding a vehicle that had been involved in an accident. The end result, was the driver being charged with impaired as well as several other charges.

Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple calls at approximately 5:50pm on November 2, 2023, regarding the driving of a silver pickup truck. Information had been received that the vehicle had struck a bridge, causing damage to both the bridge and the vehicle. The vehicle then continued on making its way to Highway 28. The pickup truck was then involved in a second collision, this time involving another vehicle driving in the opposite direction. OPP officers arrived on scene and after speaking with the driver, determined the driver to be impaired. The accused was transported from the scene to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was spoken to by EMS but appeared to be uninjured.

Bruce VANDERELST (age 60) of Apsley ON., was arrested and charged with:

·      Operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs

·      Dangerous operation

·      Operation while Prohibited under the Criminal Code

·      Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Opioid

·      Drive Motor Vehicle, no currently validated permit

·      Fail to apply for permit on becoming owner

·      Fail to remain

·      Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

The accused had their vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on November 28, 2023.

The Peterborough County OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
