Beautiful Fall Day For A Clean-Up Along the Ganaraska River

In Community, Editor Choice, Local

With the salmon season running a bit late this year, there are still many fish that are attracting tourists to Port Hope.

The season of fishing along the river closed at midnight on September 30, 2023, but for a few of the uneducated anglers, that didn’t stop them from illegally fishing in the Ganaraska River on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

With the season ending it was also time for a Adam Pearson’s annual cleaning of the Ganaraska River.

Pearson has organized the event every year for at least a decade with people meeting up Queenies Bake Shop on Walton Street to gather garbage bags and gloves for the journey up and down the river for the cleanup.

“Anytime you have a large group of guests coming into town, there is going to be a little bit of extra garbage,” said Pearson.

Pearson estimates there were up to 75-volunteers who came out to help with the clean up on Sunday.

“We have a lot of people in for this and it’s because they care about the community. Once you start doing these community activities you gain even more caring for the community and being apartment of it and that’s what being in small town is all about.”

“We’re going to go down there and make Port Hope beautiful.”
