Capitol Theatre Invites You Behind The Scenes

Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre kicked off its summer season this spring with a number of preview events.

As the summer season moves along, they have introduced a new Behind The Scenes series to enhance each presentation for theatre-goers.

The two sessions announced this week are planned in advance of two upcoming presentations – Prairie Nurse and Little Shop of Horrors.

On July 10 at 6 p.m., you can get up close and personal with Audrey, the carnivorous “horror” in the latter presentation in A Peek Behind the Puppets of Little Shop of Horrors with Adam Francis Proulx.

Proulx has worked on stage and screen throughout North America, and even won a variety of awards with his solo shows. Also an accomplished puppet builder, he has shared his gift with companies like Young People’s Theatre, Whynot Theatre, Halifax’s Neptune Theatre, Rogers TV, CBC and Nickelodeon.

Bring the whole family to hear Proulx share the process of getting the Audrey II puppets ready for the classic horror-comedy which runs Aug. 11 through Sept. 3.

On July 16 at 1 p.m., In Conversation with Prairie Nurse Playwright Marie Beath Badian is your chance to learn the true story behind the Capitol’s next summer-theatre offering.

The Filipino-Canadian playwright, writer and performer was recently co-nominated for a 2022 Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing/Web-series for the CBC Gem series Topline. Her play The Waltz was named Critic’s Pick by the Globe and Mail (and included in its 2022 list of Top Ten Toronto Productions).

It’s been 10 years since Prairie Nurse debuted at the Blythe Festival, and the Capitol is honoured to welcome its creator for an intimate and honest conversation with Artistic Director Rob Kempson about the real-life story behind the play that runs July 14 through 30.

Both sessions take place in the Sculthorpe Theatre, and tickets are $5 – or free to Capitol Circle members and 2023 Season Subscribers.
