Northumberland OPP are investigating after it’s believed a man drowned on Rice Lake on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

At approximately 2 p.m. emergency services including Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department, Hamilton Township Fire Department, Northumberland OPP and Northumberland County Paramedics responded to the swimming area of Golden Beach Resort after a swimmer went missing.

Northumberland OPP said a man was swimming with others in a swim area that is marked off by rope and buoys. When a inflatable inner-tube was blown by the wind out beyond the swimming area, a person swam out to retrieve it, horrified witnesses saw the individual struggle and go under the surface.

Two other swimmers tried to rescue the person, but couldn’t locate the individual.

Searching from shore, using fire and OPP boats and a drone the victim was found shortly before 4 p.m.

A post mortem will take place to determine the cause of death.
