Lakefront Utility Services Inc. Implements Leak Detection Program

In Local

Lakefront Utility Services Inc. (LUSI) will be undertaking a Leak Detection Program on the 139 kilometers of watermains which comprises Cobourg’s water distribution system. Nichol Water Services will be conducting the Leak Detection Program on behalf of LUSI beginning April 24th and ending April 28th, 2023.

A Leak Detection Program is a systematic search, performed by skilled Technicians, which uses correlation equipment and an electronic acoustic amplifier to listen for leak sounds within the
distribution system. A leak sound is the distinct noise produced when pressurized water is forcing its way through a crack or joint in a pipe or valve. Technicians will be using these methods to pinpoint the precise locations of underground leaks.

“Leak detection programs are integral to the reliability and maintenance of the water distribution system,” commented Larry Spyrka, Manager of Water Systems at Lakefront Utility Services
Inc., “Identifying these small leaks now, allows us to be proactive instead of reactive, which can be costly. With this audit of our water system, we can identify leaks, and prioritize and budget for repairs, both reducing water loss and the possibility of main breaks.”

As the watermains are primarily located under roadways, LUSI has opted to conduct the program overnight primarily to reduce impact on traffic flow. The leak detection equipment is also more effective when the demand for water is at its lowest, which enables staff to accurately locate smaller leaks that may be missed during the day due to high levels of usage and background noise.

Detection activities will be conducted mostly on Town property; however, technicians may need access to private properties depending on watermain locations. Should a technician require access to private property to confirm the presence of a leak, the property owner will be contacted prior to gaining access.

Please be advised that all Nichol Water Services technicians have a company vehicle that displays the logo.

Lakefront proudly continues to exceed provincial drinking water standards and remains committed to providing reliable services that contribute to the comfort and safety of the community.
