Northumberland Amnesty International Hosting Comedy Night

In Upcoming Events

There hasn’t been a lot to laugh about of late. COVID, the invasion of Ukraine, threats of nuclear war and the now all too obvious effects of global climate change.

All that is going to change on 9 December. Northumberland is going to laugh until we…well, you know.

For more than a decade Amnesty International Northumberland organized a dinner at the Woodlawn Inn in Cobourg. The dinners raised a small amount of money for our chapter and a large amount for Amnesty International Canada while educating us on human rights challenges around the world and motivating us to take action.

Well, the Woodlawn is no more and we are rethinking our annual event. What do people really need, other than a night out and some education around human rights issues, we asked ourselves.
The answer? A good laugh. A really, really, really good laugh. One that can be heard through your mask.

So, on 9 December, on the eve of International Human Rights Day, Northumberland Amnesty International is hosting its very first Stand-up (Comedy) for Human Rights night.

Four of Canada’s top touring comedians, with a history of comedy focussing on human rights issues, will be at the Ganaraska Hotel in Port Hope to help usher in Human Rights Day. If you’re even just a casual listener to CBC’s Laugh Out Loud, The Debaters or any of the many on-screen stand-up comedy shows out there you’ll recognize them.

Tickets can be ordered either at standupforhumanrights.eventbrite.com or if you prefer using cash or a cheque by calling Derek at 905-376-3110.
