Cobourg Police – Multiple Firearms and Drug Charges As A Result of Traffic Stop (Name Released)

On Friday, September 30, 2022, at 11:30 p.m., police on general patrol conducted a traffic stop on Division Street in the Town of Cobourg.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the vehicle’s passenger provided a false name and date of birth and was in breach of his release order. The passenger fled the area and was safely arrested a short distance away.

During the arrest, police located a Glock pistol with a full magazine, drugs, $ 1,780 Canadian currency and three cell phones. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is more than $5,000.

As a result of the investigation, the passenger, a 17-year-old male youth, was charged with the following offences:

1) Passenger- fail to properly wear seat belt, contrary to section 106(3)(b) of The Highway Traffic Act

2) Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code

3) Three counts of Fail to comply with release order-other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code

4) Assault with intent to resist arrest, contrary to section 270(1)(b) of the Criminal Code

5) Escape lawful custody, contrary to section 145(1) of the Criminal Code

6) Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance (Fentanyl) for the Purpose of Trafficking, Contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act

7) Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance (Crystal Meth) for the Purpose of Trafficking, Contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances

8) Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance (Crack cocaine) for the Purpose of Trafficking, Contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act

9) Possession of Proceeds of Crime Under $5,000 – contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

10) Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle – contrary to section 94(1) of the Criminal Code

11) Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition – contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code

12) Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized – contrary to section 92(1)(a) of the of Criminal Code

13) Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm – contrary to section 91(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

14) Two counts of Carry Concealed Weapon – contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code

15) Careless Use of a Firearm – contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

16) Two counts of Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the Criminal Code

17) Two counts of Possession of a prohibited device, or ammunition, contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code

18) Four counts of Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code

The driver, Andrew Kanellos (42) of Trenton, was charged with the following offences:

1) Drive without proper rear light- Motor vehicle, contrary to section 62(1) of The Highway Traffic Act

2) Drive motor vehicle- No licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

3) Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle, contrary to section 7(5)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act

4) Knowledge of unauthorized firearm in motor vehicle, contrary to section 94(1) of the Criminal Code

5) Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code

Both were held for a show cause hearing later today.
