Fourth Annual Bandit Run Comes to Cobourg

In Local

The Firebird Club of Canada presented the fourth annual Bandit Run in Victoria Park on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

The event is a take-off from the movie Smokey and the Bandit which was released in 1977 and featured Burt Reynolds.

The synopsis of the movie is about two bootleggers attempting to illegally transport 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta. While the Snowman (Jerry Reed) drives the truck carrying the beer, the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) drives a Pontiac Trans Am to distract law enforcement and keep the attention off the Snowman. During their run, they are pursued by Texas county sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason).

There were all types of Trans Am’s and Firebird’s in Victoria Park on Sunday along with other classic cars.

At 10:30 a.m. lead by Cobourg Police and Cobourg Fire Department, the Bandit Run was on again, with a convoy of approximately 80-vehicles being lead by the Bandit, followed by the Sheriff and the Snowman through Cobourg and up to Rice Lake before returning back to Victoria Park to spend the day.

Vehicles came from Kitchener, Ottawa, Collingwood and even Sudbury for the event.

There were raffles and prizes to raise funds for the event.

Money raised from the event goes to Make-A-Wish Canada.

Over the last three years, just over $30,000 has been raised.
